What You'll Learn

HDW1-1 is one half of the (L1) 3D Printer Hardware course (HDW1). The two halves cover the two printer families in the FundedYouth lab:

  • HDW1-1 — Sovol SV06 Plus (open-frame, manual bed leveling, the machine you’ll use in 3DP1)
  • HDW1-2 — Bambu Lab P1S, X1C, and A1 (enclosed, touchscreen, AMS — the machines you’ll use in 3DP2)

The slicer courses (3DP1 and 3DP2) teach you the software — how to prepare a model and produce a print file. The hardware courses teach you the machine — how to actually run it, feed it, and fix it when something goes wrong.

Most of what you do in 3DP1 happens on a computer. HDW1-1 happens at the printer.

You’ll put your hands on the machine: turn the leveling knobs, feed filament through the extruder, watch the nozzle heat up, and pop a finished print off the plate. By the end you should be able to walk up to an SV06 Plus, get it ready, and start a print without an instructor doing it for you.

The SV06 Plus is an open-frame printer, which means the hot parts aren’t behind a door.

  • The hot end reaches about 195°C (383°F) — hot enough to burn instantly
  • The print bed reaches about 60°C (140°F) — hot enough to be uncomfortable
  • The gantry moves fast and doesn’t stop for fingers

Instructors supervise all printer use. You’ll learn the safe way to remove a print (and why yanking on it is a bad idea), plus why touching the build surface with bare fingers causes prints to lift off mid-job — skin oils are the number one cause of adhesion failures.

You do not need a laptop. FundedYouth provides the printers, filament, and tools.

Time commitment: One 1-hour class, in person at FundedYouth.

Age: Appropriate for ages 8 and up. This is a hands-on class near hot components, so instructors keep group sizes small and supervise directly.

Prerequisite: None. Many students take it alongside 3DP1, which covers the software side of the same workflow.

Safety: The Sovol SV06 Plus is an open-frame printer with a nozzle around 195°C and a bed around 60°C. A significant part of this class is the safety training — recognizing hot zones, keeping clear of the moving gantry, and removing prints without forcing them.

What your kid will leave with: The confidence and competence to prepare and operate a real 3D printer independently — including diagnosing a failed print and clearing a clogged nozzle, which are the two things that stop most beginners cold.

Do I need to take 3DP1 first? No. HDW1-1 has no prerequisites. That said, the two work well together: 3DP1 teaches you to make a print file, HDW1-1 teaches you to run the machine that prints it.

What’s “bed leveling” and why does it matter? The nozzle has to sit the right distance from the print bed — about the thickness of a sheet of paper. Too far and the first layer won’t stick. Too close and the nozzle drags. On the SV06 Plus you set this by hand with four knobs, and you’ll practice until you can do it reliably.

What happens if the filament runs out mid-print? The SV06 Plus has a filament runout sensor that pauses the print so you can load a new roll and resume. You’ll learn to identify it and what to do when it triggers.

My print came out looking like spaghetti — what happened? That’s usually an adhesion failure: the print came loose from the bed and the nozzle kept extruding into thin air. Troubleshooting exactly this is part of the class.

Can I do this at home? If you have an SV06 Plus (or a similar open-frame printer), yes — the leveling, loading, and maintenance steps carry over to most FDM printers.
